Geotechnical Engineering

We think outside the box

Significant Geotechnical Projects completed by the ARQ team include the 90 m high hardfill embankment along the Sharqiyah expressway. The conceptual and detail design was completed in Oman by Bart and Astrid and the design was peer reviewed by Dr. Shaw and his team in South Africa. This alternative design allowed the Contractor to minimize the required construction time and reduce costs.

Astrid Aubry has supervised numerous geotechnical and geophysical investigations in Oman for road, bridge, dam, tourist and industrial development projects. Functions included definition of scope of works in liaison with clients, compiling specifications and tender documents, administration of the investigations, interpretation of the results, mechanical characterisation of the material and determination of the required design parameters.

One of our specialities is in situ large shear box tests to determine in situ shear parameters for large structures, such as the hardfill embankment, bridge and dam foundations. Actual in situ measurements provide greater confidence in the input data and materials strength properties to be used for analysis, which in turn allows greater confidence in the results produced.

Settlement analysis is of particular importance for extension projects where adjacent loading may result in unacceptable differential settlement of the existing adjacent structure. Similarly, for reservoir sites it is important to consider the effects of loading on adjacent sites, especially when these are constructed on moisture sensitive foundations. ARQ & Partners has the necessary expertise and resources to perform these analyses.

Geophysical investigations provide a powerful tool to assess the underlying properties of underground material to determine further verification investigations ad to determine mechanical properties of the material. ARQ & Partners has the necessary expertise and resources to interpret the results of these investigations.
